The work of young composer Vincenzo Bellini – a master of romantic melancholy – after its premier in 1831, quickly attained public popularity and appeared on all the world’s important stages. Due to the difficult, exacting virtuosity of the vocal parts, they were performed by the best singers, including incomparable divas – Giuditta Pasta and Maria Callas. The piece was admired by such prominent artists as Wagner, Berlioz, Chopin, Verdi, and Bottesini.
